I wrote a Blytonesque children’s adventure story about the 1860 looting of the Old Summer Palace in Beijing by British and French troops.

The piece has just been published in Liminal Volume II – a stunning book showcasing Asian-Australian art, writing and conversations.

I took artistic licence with the story, though many details were based on the recollections of Henry Brougham Loch.

Leah Jing McIntosh edited the piece and Jeffrey Phillips illustrated it. Ian See provided early comments. The “lashings of tea” in the story are courtesy of Benjamin Dodds.
