Geoff Orton and I met because we happened to be sitting next to each other at a Sydney Writers’ Festival session, Singapore Sling, in May 2011. It was the week after I’d quit corporate law to give myself more time to write, and it was encouraging to see that one of the panellists, the writer Shamini Flint, was also a former lawyer.

At the time, Geoff was getting his project, The Writers Bloc, off the ground. Its official website has recently launched online and includes a new blog series, Writers’ Other Jobs, in which writers talk about the bizarre and fascinating things they’ve done for money.

I’ve written an article for the series, Maverick, on how I quit corporate law and became a lollipop lady. I hope you enjoy it.

New articles in the series are published every Thursday, so make sure you sign up to The Writers Bloc newsletter.
